His interest in the livelihood and issues concerning labourers and the working class developed to such an extent that eventually he did his masters in labor studies after his graduation in commerce. At present, Ajit Sawant is pursuing his doctorate in the field of labour welfare for the unorganised workers. Ajit Sawant is a product of the youthful and dynamic tone set by the late Hon. Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. His qualities earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and he served the Congress Party as the General Secretary and Spokesperson of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee for more than 12 years. Ajit Sawant was at the forefront in requesting rational implementation of the new Property Tax Rules. He contended that if the new rules were implemented, the owners of older buildings in the Sount Mumbai area would not be able to pay the same and the remaining Marathi people would be forced to evacuate or sell their property leading to the dissapearance of the sons of the soil from Mumbai. Under the leadership of Ajit Sawant, the 'Sanchar Union' of the Mahanagar Telephone Employees met the Information and Communication Minister Dr. Shakil Ahmed with their issues. The issues discussed were Pension Scheme on the lines of BSNL, unnecessary transfers of the employees, etc. Mr. Ajit Sawant has solved various issues for the labour class of many categories.
